Founded by Ardeshir I from Sassanid Empire in the 3rd century AD, Kerman has a history full of prosperity and plunder.

Kerman's location made it the only safe passageway to travel through and Elamites, who had taken the responsibility of safeguarding the caravan routes, had made defensive outposts here and it became a settlement.

Kerman has been the subject of attacks and destruction 14 times during its history. Ardeshir I, the founder of Sassanians gave particular attention to the city, but Arabs made some destructive invasion. In Safavids era, Kerman expanded a lot; business improved and the city exported its carpets and rugs to European countries.

The present city of Kerman was rebuilt in the 19th century to the northwest of the old city, but the city did not return to its former size until the 20th century.

It's worth mentioning Kerman province is the second largest home to nomadic tribes in Iran. The tribes in this region consist of different ethnic groups who speak Persian, Turkish and Baluchi languages. Each of them has their own specific musical melodies, dances and lifestyle.

The precious carpets of Kerman have been decorating the floors and walls of several royal palaces since very old days. Kerman Carpets and Kilims are famous not only in Iran, but also around the world.
